How to Downgrade Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk’s Edgerunners 2 Update, version 2.5, came out on October 22, 2026. Right away, every RED4ext plugin made the game crash. RED4ext’s maker said fixing RED4ext alone wasn’t enough: each plugin’s author has to put out a new build.

The big frameworks caught up within three days, as the table below shows. Every other plugin waits on its own author, so one slow mod can keep a whole list from loading.

The good news is that CD Projekt keeps old versions one click away on Steam, and GOG Galaxy has them too. You don’t need any console commands.

Back up first. Copy your saves from %USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\CD Projekt Red\Cyberpunk 2077, the folder CD Projekt lists. Only the latest version is fully supported, so load the old patch with a save you made before you updated.

Check your mod’s download page for the patch it supports. Then find it here.

Version Steam branch Who it’s for
2.5 (latest) None Mods that have updated for Edgerunners 2
2.31 2_31_old Most mod lists from before October 22
2.3 2_30_old Mods that never got a 2.31 build
2.21 2_21_old Older 2.x mods
2.13 2_13_old Mods from before update 2.2
1.63 1_63_legacy_patch Pre-2.0 builds and mods

None of these branches needs a password, according to Steam’s data for the game. Phantom Liberty switches along with the game on every branch except 1.63, which came out before the expansion.

Most players want 2.31. It arrived in September 2025 and stayed current for more than a year, so almost every mod has a build for it.

  1. In your Steam Library, right-click Cyberpunk 2077 and choose Properties.
  2. Open Game Versions & Betas. Older Steam versions call this tab Betas.
  3. Pick your branch from the dropdown, such as 2_31_old. Steam downloads that build right away.
  4. Start the game and check the version number on the main menu.

Staying on the branch is all it takes to stop updates. Steam installs that branch’s build instead of the default one, and these old branches haven’t changed since 2025.

  1. Open Cyberpunk 2077 from your installed games in GOG Galaxy.
  2. Click the settings icon, then Manage installation, then Configure.
  3. Untick Automatically update to the newest version. Pick the version you want and click OK.

For 1.63, set Beta Channels to 1_63_legacy_patch first, as CD Projekt’s steps explain. The RED Modding wiki walks through the same menu.

Epic can’t roll back, since it only offers the newest version. You can still keep the next update from breaking things by turning off auto-updates for all games in Epic’s settings, under Manage Games.

Rolling back the game isn’t enough. The 2.5 builds of the frameworks won’t run on older patches: RED4ext 1.31.0 needs patch 2.5, and Cyber Engine Tweaks 1.38.0 dropped older patches.

  1. Delete the whole r6\cache folder inside your game folder, then verify the game files in Steam or GOG. This is the RED Modding wiki’s cache reset, and it clears scripts built for 2.5.
  2. Install the framework builds for your version. For 2.31, these are the last releases before 2.5:
Framework For 2.31 For 2.5
Cyber Engine Tweaks 1.37.1 1.38.0 or newer (Oct 22)
RED4ext 1.30.0 1.31.0 or newer (Oct 24)
redscript 0.5.31 0.5.32 or newer (Oct 22)
ArchiveXL 1.27.5 1.28.0 or newer (Oct 25)
TweakXL 1.11.5 1.12.0 or newer (Oct 25)
Codeware 1.20.6 1.21.0 or newer (Oct 25)
  1. Put back the 2.31 builds of your other mods. Any mod that needs RED4ext 1.31 won’t load on 2.31.

For an older branch, pick each framework’s release from that patch’s time on its GitHub page. Mods you added through the new in-game Mods menu came with 2.5’s mod.io support, so they don’t carry over.

Using cross-platform saves? They expect the latest patch, so turn off Enable cross-platform Saves under Settings, then Gameplay.

When your mods catch up, pick None in Steam’s dropdown. On GOG, choose the newest version and turn automatic updates back on.

Then clear r6\cache again and install the 2.5 builds of your frameworks and mods.

Version Lock is our free Windows app. It walks you through the branch switch, then snapshots your game before each update so you can roll back in one click.
