GTA V Fix Guide

Most PC problems with this game now trace back to one change. In March 2025, Rockstar split it into two separate PC editions, Enhanced and Legacy.

Your saves don’t move between them on their own, and a PC that ran Legacy fine can fall short for Enhanced. So a save that looks lost is often just sitting in the other edition.

Still deciding which one to install? Our Enhanced and Legacy comparison covers that choice. This page is only about fixing things.

Problem First fix
Story Mode save missing in Enhanced Upload it in Legacy, then download it in Enhanced
Online character missing in Enhanced Run Migrate Profile from Enhanced’s pause menu
Crash at launch Check the requirements, update the GPU driver, verify files
ERR_GFX_STATE crash Update or roll back the driver, then switch to DirectX 12
Mods stopped working Match Script Hook V and each mod to your edition and patch

Get a missing Story Mode save into Enhanced

Section titled “Get a missing Story Mode save into Enhanced”

Enhanced does not read Legacy save files. Rockstar moves them with a one-time upload, explained in its Story Mode migration guide.

  1. Sign in to the same Rockstar Games account in both editions.
  2. In Legacy, open the pause menu, choose Game, then Upload Save Game.
  3. Pick the save, confirm it, and wait for the upload to finish.
  4. In Enhanced, open the pause menu, choose Game, then Download Save Game.

You get one transfer per account. You can swap the uploaded save until you download it. After that, nothing you play in Legacy carries over.

GTA Online profiles also stay put until you move them. In Enhanced, open the pause menu, choose Online, then Migrate Profile.

Read Rockstar’s Online profile migration guide before you confirm. Some accounts can’t migrate, and picking a new character can overwrite a character slot.

Enhanced needs much more than Legacy, including a 4GB graphics card and an SSD. Check Rockstar’s system requirements before you spend time on fixes.

If your PC meets them, work through these in order:

  1. Update your graphics driver.
  2. Verify the game files. In the Rockstar Games Launcher, open Settings, pick the game under My installed games, then select Verify Integrity. Rockstar shows each screen in its file check guide.
  3. Turn off overlays from Discord, Steam, and your GPU app for one test launch.
  4. Set any CPU or GPU overclock back to stock.

Bought it on Steam? Use Steam’s Verify integrity of game files instead, as shown in Valve’s file verification guide.

Rockstar’s ERR_GFX_STATE guide lists these fixes in this order:

  1. Update your graphics driver. If it’s already current, roll back to an older one.
  2. In the game, go to Settings > Graphics, set Advanced Settings to Unlocked, and change Graphics API to DirectX 12.
  3. Still crashing? Open the game folder, right-click GTAV.exe, and choose Properties. On the Compatibility tab, tick Run this program as an administrator and Disable fullscreen optimizations.

Most single-player script mods need Script Hook V, and a game update can break it until a new version comes out. Its download page lists the game patches it supports, so check there after every update.

  • Make sure each mod lists support for your edition, not just the game name.
  • If your mods only support Legacy, keep that setup on Legacy.
  • Never take mods into GTA Online. Rockstar allows single-player mods but punishes modding in Online.
