GTA V Enhanced vs Legacy: Which Version Should You Play?
Compare GTA V Enhanced vs Legacy on PC, including graphics, performance, requirements, GTA Online, mods, saves, and which version to play.
The best choice depends on your setup: Choose GTA V Enhanced if your PC meets its higher requirements, you want the improved graphics and GTA Online features, and your friends also use Enhanced. Choose GTA V Legacy for older hardware, an established mod setup that depends on it, or friends who have stayed on Legacy.
Enhanced is not a patch applied to the old PC game. It is a separate application with its own installation and its own GTA Online player pool. Existing PC owners received Enhanced as a free upgrade, while new PC purchases include both versions. You can keep both installed and choose between them.

What changed in GTA V Enhanced?
Graphics, loading, and hardware support
Enhanced adds ray-traced ambient occlusion and global illumination on PC, along with ray-traced shadows and reflections. It also supports NVIDIA DLSS, AMD FSR, faster loading through SSDs and DirectStorage, higher resolutions and aspect ratios, higher framerates, DualSense adaptive triggers, and Dolby Atmos audio on supported systems.
Those improvements come with a substantial jump in minimum hardware. Legacy can run on hardware from a much older generation, while Enhanced requires a 4GB DirectX 12-capable graphics card and an SSD at minimum. Enhanced is the better-looking version, but that does not mean it will run better on every PC.

GTA Online content and player pools
Enhanced includes features that previously appeared on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. These include Hao’s Special Works vehicles and upgrades, ambient animals and the Wildlife Photography Challenge, GTA+, Career Progress, and the Career Builder for new characters.
The two PC versions do not share GTA Online sessions. An Enhanced player cannot join a Legacy player, even when both use the same store or Rockstar Games account. If GTA Online with friends matters, install the version used by the group. Rockstar explicitly says that PC players must use the same version to play together.
GTA V Enhanced and Legacy system requirements
The gap between the minimum requirements explains why Legacy still exists. These are Rockstar’s listed minimums:

For Enhanced, Rockstar recommends Windows 11, an Intel Core i5-9600K or Ryzen 5 3600, 16GB of dual-channel RAM, an RTX 3060 8GB or RX 6600 XT 8GB, and a 105GB DirectStorage-compatible drive. The current Rockstar requirements page should be the final check before downloading.
If your PC only just meets Legacy’s requirements, stay with Legacy. Upscaling can help Enhanced after the game is running, but it does not remove the newer CPU, GPU, DirectX, and storage requirements.
How Story Mode save migration actually works
Story Mode migration is a manual, one-time transfer. Signing into the same Rockstar Games account is necessary, but it does not automatically sync a Legacy save into Enhanced.
- Open GTA V Legacy and go to Pause Menu > Game > Upload Save Game.
- Choose the save you want to migrate and upload it to Rockstar Games.
- Open GTA V Enhanced and download that save from the Story landing page or Pause Menu > Game > Download Save Game.
Only one Story Mode save can be uploaded per account. You can replace the uploaded file until you download it in Enhanced. After that download succeeds, Rockstar does not allow another Story Mode migration on the account. Progress made later in Legacy will not sync into Enhanced.

GTA Online profile migration
Online migration starts inside Enhanced from the GTA Online landing page or Pause Menu > Online > Migrate Profile. Your Legacy profile remains available after migration, but the two profiles then progress independently. Money, purchases, unlocks, or progress earned later in one version do not automatically appear in the other.
Check Rockstar’s Online profile migration guide before confirming the transfer, especially if you have already created an Enhanced character.

Which version should you play?
Choose Enhanced for a modern PC and the newer experience
Enhanced is the sensible default when your system meets the requirements and you play unmodded Story Mode or GTA Online. It provides the stronger graphics feature set, faster storage path, and the Enhanced-only Online additions. It is also the required choice when your friends have moved to Enhanced.
Choose Legacy for a low-end PC
Legacy is the correct choice when your hardware falls below Enhanced’s minimums or when Enhanced performs poorly. The core Story Mode remains the same game, and choosing Legacy avoids forcing newer rendering features onto hardware that was never intended to support them.
Choose Legacy for an established mod setup
Do not assume a Legacy mod will work in Enhanced. Script hooks, loaders, plugins, and individual mods need explicit support for the version you launch. If a working single-player setup depends on Legacy-only components, keep it on Legacy until every required part confirms Enhanced compatibility.
Match the version used by your GTA Online friends
This decision overrides the graphics comparison. Enhanced and Legacy Online players are separated. A better-looking version is no help if it prevents you from joining the people you play with.
You do not have to uninstall Legacy to try Enhanced. Keep both until you have confirmed performance, completed any migration you want, and checked the compatibility of your multiplayer group and mods. Just remember that they are separate installations and, after migration, separate progress paths.
