Steam Game Downgrader: Version Lock

Put your modded Steam games back on the version your mods support, and keep them there until your mods catch up.

You finally have Skyrim running with 300 mods. Then Steam updates the game overnight, and now it crashes before the main menu.

The game isn't broken. Your script extender is. Each build works with one exact game version, which is why SKSE's download page lists the single version each build supports.

We're building an app that puts your game back on the version that worked, and keeps the next update away until your mods are ready.

Five Jobs It Does So You Don't Have To

  1. Goes back to the version you need

Already updated? Pick the version your mods support and it fetches that exact build from Steam. No console commands, and no hunting for version IDs on SteamDB.

  2. Holds updates

Your game stays on the version your mods need, so Steam doesn't swap it out halfway through a playthrough.

  3. Snapshots first

Before any update, it keeps a copy of the files that update will replace, plus your saves.

  4. Tells you when it's safe

It watches your mod tools and lets you know the moment they support the new game version.

  5. Rolls back in one click

If an update slips past it, put the old files back from your snapshot without downloading anything.

Why Steam Updates Break Mods

Steam has no switch to stop updates for one game. Its closest setting only waits until you launch, and players have asked Valve for a real off switch for years.

Big mods lean on script extenders like SKSE and F4SE. Any game update can stop them from loading until their makers release a new build.

Players already undo updates by hand. The Fallout 4 Downgrader has more than 380,000 unique downloads. Tools like it each cover one game, and none of them stop the next update.

How the Rollback Works

An update replaces only a small part of a game. When we compared GTA V's September 2026 update file by file, it swapped out about 7% of the install.

So the app snapshots your game with Windows hard links, which take almost no space. When an update replaces a file, the old copy stays in your snapshot, ready to put back.

It reads everything it needs from Steam's own files on your PC. It never asks for your Steam password.
